Now in the third year of doctoral study at Northumbria University, Mark retired in September 2023 following a 30-year career in policing, serving predominantly as a detective across all ranks through to Detective Chief Inspector.
A long-standing passion for investigation culminated in ten years as a nationally accredited PIP3 Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), leading complex homicide investigations and overseeing the safe management and resolution of crimes in action, including kidnap and abduction offences.
Alongside this operational experience, Mark developed a growing interest in how academic research can inform and enhance real-world policing practice. This commitment to bridging theory and practice led to the award of a Master of Science (MSc) with Distinction in Criminal Investigation from Teesside University in October 2022.
His current doctoral research, supervised by Northumbria University’s Business School, explores the impact of occupational stressors, personal resources, and passion for work on well-being outcomes among Senior Investigating Officers. This three-year project integrates professional insight with academic inquiry and aims to influence national debate and promote positive well-being outcomes for future SIOs across UK policing.
